Center for Student Advising
The innovative Center for Student Advising enhances the college experience at Columbia.
An innovative interior “campus” houses an entirely new team-based approach to student advising. Public spaces scattered throughout orient students, encourage informal meetings between advisors and students, and engender staff collaboration. Tile floors and reflective perforated metal ceiling panels recall the paving pattern of the most iconic outdoor public space on campus. Each public space has a name, selected by students, which is portrayed on illuminated signs. Light colored finishes, abundant natural light, and a generous amount of frosted glass are used to create a warm and spacious environment that is open yet respectful of each student’s need for privacy.
“Stephen and his team created light, space, privacy, and joy. The design not only achieved all of its goals for students, but made employees feel valued and appreciated, which boosted morale, enhanced our retention, thus increasing our effectiveness overall in our mission to help students. The project exceeded our dreams in every way.”
